Benelli Argo E Fluted

A fluted-barrel Argo E in .30-06 Springfield and .308 Winchester, built on Benelli’s short-stroke ARGO gas system.

The fluting is not decoration. A barrel of larger diameter is stiffer and vibrates more predictably, and it carries more mass, so it heats more slowly across a string of shots. Cutting longitudinal flutes into a larger-diameter barrel keeps most of that stiffness and heat capacity while shedding the weight that would otherwise come with it — which is why a fluted barrel needs its own design and a more involved production process, rather than being a plain barrel with grooves cut in afterwards.
